India is a country that takes its name from the Indus river. The nation of India or Bharat has been called by numerous names including “India”, “Bharat” or “Bharatvarsh”, or “Hind” or “Hindustan. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the name “India” came from Latin India, which was a reference to South Asia and a region to its east. The ancient Greeks referred to the Indians as Indoi, “people of the Indus”, this name stretched out over the whole subcontinent and was adjusted to “India” by the Romans. Since the seventeenth century, Europe has perceived India as the region’s legitimate name.
