The name Liadan is a girl’s name meaning “grey” and is of Irish origin. It is a feminine name and is pronounced “lee-uh-dan” or “lee-uh-dawn.” The name Liadan is a derivative of liath ‘grey’. In Irish mythology, Liadan was the daughter of the poet and chieftain Fionn Mac Cumhail. She fell in love with a warrior named Cuirithir, but their love was forbidden, and they had to flee from Fionn’s wrath. They lived in a cave together for a time, but Cuirithir was eventually killed in battle. Liadan died of a broken heart shortly thereafter. In modern times, Liadan is a popular name in Ireland and is occasionally used in other English-speaking countries as well.
