Elsinore is a girl’s name of Danish origin, meaning neck, narrow strait.” Elsinore, also known as Helsingør in Danish, is a city situated on the northeastern coast of the island of Zealand in Denmark. It lies at the narrowest point of the Øresund, the strait between Denmark and Sweden. Elsinore is most famous for being the location of Kronborg Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kronborg Castle is known as “Elsinore Castle” in English and was made famous by William Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet.”
